Merlin

Merlin is Magic Suite's built-in AI assistant, available across Magic Suite applications (Admin, AlertMagic, DataMagic, ReportMagic and others).

Merlin communicates in two ways:

  • System toasts - success, error and status notifications, shown automatically
  • Interactive chat - a chat box you can type questions into directly

The interactive chat is AI/LLM-backed. Treat its answers as a helpful starting point, and verify anything business-critical against your actual data.

Using the Merlin chat window

  • The chat window can be pinned to the side of the screen (docked) or used as a floating panel, and can be maximised or minimised
  • Opening or closing Merlin does not lose your place or in-progress edits elsewhere on the page (for example, mid-edit in Report Studio)
  • While Merlin works on an answer, it shows what it is doing at each step, for example "Looking up your report schedules"
  • Merlin respects your Light Mode / Dark Mode display preference
  • Merlin works alongside other open dialogs (create, edit, clone, delete) - it will not trap you in an overlay you cannot exit

What Merlin can help with today

  • How-to questions: Merlin searches the Magic Suite help and answers from it, with links to the pages it used
  • ReportMagic macros: which macro does what you need, and a macro's parameters and examples, taken from its help page
  • The page you are on: what the page is for and what it is showing you
  • Report schedules and batch jobs: your schedules, when they last ran, and why a run failed
  • Your latest report run: in Report Studio, or for the report selected on a batch job's Progress page, what the macros did, including each warning and error with its message
  • Notifications, feedback and badges: your notifications, the feedback you have raised and the badges you have earned, by name and level. Merlin can also raise feedback for you, after showing you a draft to confirm
  • Release notes: what changed in a Magic Suite version
  • System toast notifications, which continue to work across all apps regardless of chat settings (see below)

Tenant Administrators can also ask about:

  • Connections: the Tenant's Connections and whether they are working. On the Connections page, Merlin can also tell you why the Connection you have selected is failing
  • Badges leaderboard: who in the Tenant has the most badges, ranked as on the Badges Leaderboard page
  • Users: who can sign in to the Tenant, and the access they hold
  • Subscriptions (coming in the next 4.6 release): the Tenant's subscriptions to Magic Suite products, with their dates, whether each is active, upcoming or expired, and the Pro quantity where there is one. Prices are not included
  • Tickets: tickets in your ticketing system, read through the Tenant's Connection or your own personal one. Merlin adds a note, changes a status or raises a ServiceNow ticket only when you ask it to, and never through a Connection marked Read Only
  • Cisco Meraki: read-only questions about your Meraki networks, including the configuration change log: who changed what, and when, for any time window

Note: a dedicated Report Studio co-pilot, an AlertMagic-specific assistant, direct read access to your Tenant's files and projects, and Knowledge Graph-backed answers are all planned but not yet released. Please do not rely on Merlin for these today.

Per-Tenant chat control

Panoramic Data can enable or disable the interactive Merlin chat for a Tenant independently of the rest of Magic Suite. This is a Panoramic Data-controlled setting, not one a customer's own Tenant Admin can change themselves.

Chat is enabled by default for every Tenant. When chat is disabled for a Tenant:

  • The interactive chat input is hidden from all users in that Tenant, after a page refresh or in a new tab, and "Merlin chat is disabled for this Tenant." is shown in its place
  • Anyone who does try to chat sees a graceful message, for example "An error occurred while processing your chat message: Merlin chat is disabled for this Tenant."
  • The request is refused by the server, and no call is made to the underlying AI model. This is enforced server-side, not merely hidden in the user interface
  • System toast notifications are unaffected - they keep working normally even when chat is disabled

Why this exists: it lets Magic Suite ship AI features without waiting on any individual customer's AI-approval process. A Tenant can be switched to "chat off" while everything else in Magic Suite continues working normally, then switched back on once approved.

Tips

  • Merlin's answers are AI-generated - use them as a starting point and confirm anything important independently
  • If Merlin seems to be answering an earlier question rather than your latest one, try closing and reopening the chat
  • If you notice unexpected behaviour, please contact Panoramic Data support
